ISO/IEC JTC 1 / SC 32 / WG 02

General Information (WG2 BNE 005)

 

Standards Australia takes pleasure in inviting delegates to a meeting of ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC 21 (or its successor as determined by JTC 1 ) and the associated Working Groups to be held in Brisbane, 29 June - 10 July 1998.

Meetings

Meetings will be held at the Queensland University of Queensland (QUT) which is situated within the Central Business District of Brisbane and in walking distance of a number of hotels and restaurants.

Delegates are requested to fill in their details

Computer Facilities

There will be PCs and a laser printer (with facilities for connection of notebook computers) available for the use of delegates. Word Version 6.O and Wordperfect Version 6.1 will be provided. There will also be facility for email and WWW access.

Facilities Fee

It is with regret that Standards Australia asks delegates to pay the facilities fee as detailed in attachment A. As can be appreciated by everyone, hosting international Standards meeting and to supply all the facilities which are now taken for granted by delegates is expensive.

Arrival in Brisbane

International flights arrive at Brisbane's international airport located 25 mins or approx 10 kms from the city. A frequent bus service connects the terminal with all major hotels at a cost of approximately AUD$7.00. Alternatively a taxi will cost approximately AUD$20.00.

Visas and passports

All foreign visitors entering Australia must have a valid passport and, with the exception of New Zealand passport holders, a valid visa for entry into Australia. Visas must be obtained before arrival in Australia. Applications should be made to an Australian Consulate or Diplomatic mission in your country of residence.

Hotels

There is a large number of hotels in the Brisbane Business District ranging in price. An indicative table is attached as attachment C together with a map of the area.

Travel tips

Electrical voltage is 240/250 AC 50 cycles, with 3 flat-pin outlets. A number of mains extension leads and multiple outlet power boards will be available for use in the meeting rooms.

Telephone outlets are slowly being changed to take the American modular (RJ45) plug, the normal Australian telephone plug is unique to the area. Adaptors are readily available at local stores.

Tipping is not obligatory. It should be at your own discretion and only for good service. As a guide, add 10% to a restaurant bill. No service charges are added to hotel bills.

Smoking in public buildings is usually prohibited, and is not permitted on public transport, including domestic air flights.

Departure from Australia

Every person 12 years and over must pay a AUD 27.00 Passenger Movement Charge (Departure tax) (Exemptions for 24 hour transit passengers). This tax is usually prepaid with an airline ticket.

Climate

July in Brisbane is generally fine although there is always a chance of rain. The average daytime temperature range is approximately 20/C. It can be cooler at night

Insurance

The organizers cannot accept any responsibility for accidents, losses, and/or damages which may occur. Delegates are advised to obtain travel, medical, personal accident and luggage insurance in their home countries prior to departure.

Credit Cards

American Express, Diners Club, Mastercard, Visa and some others are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops.
